Shirley Rodgers - Mosaic Artist
Although my professional background is in education I have spent all my life with art in one form or another.As a teenager the art teacher at school took my watercolours of plants and flowers to frame and sell for school funds. After marrying and producing a family the artwork took the shape of clothes designing and soft furnishings. I trained in tailoring and pattern design and for a short time worked as a fashion designer producing individual designs for a local fashion retail outlet.
Alongside this I developed a great interest in home and garden design using colour and form for all round interest in both the home and the garden, linking and extending naturally through colour and form indoor living spaces to outdoor living spaces. This led naturally to combine the love I had for mosaic work into 'garden art' - a need to enhance areas in the garden with exclusive and unique works of outdoor art.
From this my imagination took hold and inspiration now comes from many directions, as seen in the diversity of work I produce for indoor and outdoor spaces.
Nine years ago I gave up my career in education to pursue my dream. I have worked for private and corporate clients, producing commissioned artwork and logos, in an educational setting with primary aged children, whilst working on individual mosaics in my home studio.
I do not reproduce commissioned or Certificated Authenticated mosaics, and as the nature of mosaics dictate, each piece is individual and impossible to reproduce exactly, making each one unique.
I have begun small workshop courses and hope in the future to have an exhibition of my work at a local level at first, and then who knows - the sky's the limit!
